Client: Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority / TRANSCO
Employer: Dornier Consulting GmbH
Cost: AED 1.3 billion.
Project Stages: Design Review, Construction, Management
Project Status: Completed
Project Brief:
Water resources management in arid regions requires optimized use of scarce supplies; dam storage causes high evaporation losses, and tank storage is very costly, requiring a strategic aquifer recharge and recovery solution.
The scheme comprises 3 recharge and recovery systems, 315 recovery wells, 117 monitoring wells, 3 infiltration basins, 3 pumping stations and reservoirs, and an overall SCADA system connecting all ASR infrastructure components.
Design Concept:
The system supplies 1,000,000 residents with 182 liters of drinking water per capita per day for up to 90 days, recharging 7 MIGD of desalinated seawater over 27 months.
Recovery delivers 40 MIGD of groundwater over 90 days from the Liwa Desert, roughly 225km from Abu Dhabi, forming the emirate’s strategic water reserve.
